Based on Kenneth Slawenski’s 2011 published work “J. D. Salinger: A Life,” the Danny Strong written / directed film Rebel in the Rye is scheduled to hit American movie theater screens Friday, 15 September 2017 by IFC Films.
Revolving around the life of J. D. Salinger (Hoult) from his youth, the Second World War, the publication of his debut novel “The Catcher in the Rye” and his romantic life, the biographical drama stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoey Deutch, Kevin Spacey, Sarah Paulson, Brian d’Arcy James, Victor Garber, Hope Davis and Lucy Boynton.
Even though he is greatly supported by his teacher Whit Burnett (Spacey), Salinger must contend with numerous professional setbacks, self-doubt, his father’s (Garber) expectations, and the trauma from his war experiences before writing “The Catcher in the Rye.”
Possibly better known for playing Doyle McMaster on the Amy Sherman-Palladino created television series Gilmore Girls, and Todd Krakow in Showtime’s television series Billions, Strong has established himself as a robust screenwriter.
In addition to writing the screenplay of Rebel in the Rye, Strong penned the screenplays for Game Change, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, many episodes of Empire, and the announced film adaptation of Dan Brown’s Professor Robert Langdon adventure “The Lost Symbol.”
The Strong directed film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival Tuesday, 24 January 2017.
