Star Trek (1966)

The Vincent McEveety directed original “Star Trek” series episode “Balance of Terror” was first televised in the United States on Thursday, 15 Dec. 1966.

With a teleplay written by Paul Schneider, in this episode, Captain James T. Kirk and the Enterprise crew must determine what the correct response is when a Romulan ship makes a destructively hostile armed probe of Federation territory.

In this episode, the Romulan Commander is played by Mark Lenard. Lenard went on to play Spock’s father, Ambassador Sarek, is several “Star Trek” episodes as well as the original series big screen productions.

The last time the actor played Sarek was the 1991 episode “Unification I” of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” It was in this “ST: TNG” episode Sarek was reported to have died.

In the chronology of episode production, “Balance of Terror” was the ninth episode filmed.

While the title of this article, “Star Trek: S1.E15. ‘Balance of Terror’,” indicates this episode is episode 15, it should be noted it acknowledges the existence of the then untelevised Robert Butler directed “The Cage” as being the first episode of the Gene Roddenberry created science fiction series.
